Siesta Key

The sand here is 99% quartz. It stays cool in August and feels like flour.

Siesta Key is a geological fluke. Most beach sand is eroded shell and coral — warm, coarse, and blinding in direct sun. Siesta Key's sand is pure quartz washed down from the Appalachians over millions of years. The result is sand so fine it squeaks underfoot and stays cool enough to walk on in August noon.

The main stretch, Siesta Beach, is a half-hour drive south of Sarasota and has the full public-beach setup: lifeguards, showers, concessions, and big free parking. Turtle Beach, further south, is quieter and better for shelling.

Sunset on Siesta has a cult following. It's the kind of beach where everyone on the sand stops talking for ten minutes when the sun hits the horizon.
