Panhandle

Pensacola Beach

Emerald water, white sand, and a Gulf that feels Caribbean more than Atlantic.

• • •

The Panhandle is Florida's best-kept secret from out-of-staters: the sand is whiter, the water is greener, and the coast faces south so the water stays warm longer. Pensacola Beach sits on Santa Rosa Island, a long thin barrier stretching east from Pensacola, and most of the island is federally protected as part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Drive east from the main Pensacola Beach strip and the crowds thin out. Within fifteen minutes you're on a stretch of dune and grass that looks the way Florida did before air conditioning.

The water here is that particular emerald-Caribbean color that people associate with Destin and 30A. Pensacola gets the same water without the price tag.
