Fort Lauderdale Beach

Miami's cleaner, more walkable cousin with a two-mile promenade and an actual beach town feel.

• • •

Fort Lauderdale used to have a reputation as spring-break central. That era ended in the 1980s and what replaced it is one of the best urban beaches in the country. The main stretch runs along A1A for about two miles, with a wide promenade on one side and the Atlantic on the other.

The sand is soft, the water is reliably blue, and the beach is wide enough that it never feels packed even in March. Unlike Miami Beach, you can walk from the sand to a coffee shop, a restaurant, or your car without calling a ride.

Las Olas Boulevard, a few blocks inland, is where you end up at dinnertime. Keep driving north and you hit the quieter Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Hillsboro Beach, both worth a detour.

Practical notes

  • Best time to go: November–April
  • Parking: Garages on A1A, metered street
